Joule Media Inc. develops interactive content and applications designed for distribution through the broadcast stream and received by a digital set-top box. Joule's focus is on interactive content as well as technological solutions that support and enhance the interactive experience. Joule's development strategy is to fully exploit the capabilities of the existing set top boxes deployed today while positioning itself to grow with the evolution of more powerful, integrated digital set-top box equipment.

Legend

There is currently a wide variety of different set-top boxes and different middleware in use today. The capabilities of different set-top boxes (or decoders) vary widely as does the richness of the different middleware APIs. Joule has introduced the following legend In order to identify the minimum decoder specification and the minimum middleware required to support the different iTV products that Joule offers:

Set Top Boxes
Most Basic Decoder - Support for Electronic Program Guide or comparable. Example: RCA DRD 420 RE.
Basic Decoder Plus - Support for EPG, VOD and limited iTV applications. Example: Motorola DCT 2000.
Multi-Use Decoder - Support for EPG, VOD and iTV applications. Example: Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 (or higher), Bell ExpressVu 3100
digital receiver (or higher), EchoStar Dish 301 (or higher), Pace DigiBox.
Next Generation - Most Advanced Decoder with more RAM, more MIPS, hard disk drive. Support for PVR, VOD, iTV and other advanced applications.
Middleware/API
Least rich API. Very simple APIs with limited functionality. Example: Wink.
Typical API. Browser based, utilizing HTML & JavaScript. Example: Liberate Producer.
Most rich API. 3rd Generation languages, C, C++, Java and Flash. Examples: PowerTV, OpenTV, Liberate Producer Compact
